Intense precipitation which lasted three days in mid-November 2002 caused numerous landslides, debris flows and flooding in the canton of Grisons. The region Surselva was hardest hit, especially the communities of Schlans, Trun and Rueun. The present report describes two case studies of events in mountain torrents that were documented and analysed by the consortium “tur/GEOTEST”. The event in the “Val Campliun” is used to discuss the extraordinary erosion, the multiple debris flow surges and the importance of slope processes. In the case of the “Val Valdun” especially the vulnerability of buildings against torrential events is discussed. Not only the data of this event but also further investigations are presented. Finally, some open questions to research and to practice as well are listed.
