The Holzmatt district in Eggiwil was previously at risk of flooding. During heavy rainfall, the Schmittegraben and Holzbach streams posed a flood risk to residents and surrounding businesses. To improve safety in the long term, a comprehensive flood protection project has been underway since March 2025, under the construction management of GEOTEST AG.

A milestone was reached with the construction of the new bridge over the Schmittegraben. The old structure was a bottleneck for the watercourse, as it did not leave enough space for the water to flow. The new bridge has not only improved the drainage capacity, but also significantly increased traffic safety for vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge will be opened to traffic in the next few days. The old culvert can then be demolished, giving the two waterways even more space in the area where they converge.

The underpinning and reinforcement of the cantonal road bridge have already been completed, as has the redesign of the confluence of the Schmittegraben and the Emme. New planting ensures the stability of the embankments and ecological enhancement, and fish can now pass through unimpeded.

The deepening of the Schmittegraben ditch over a length of 160 metres is in full swing and will be completed in the coming months. At the same time, a driftwood screen is being installed on each of the two channels.

Thanks to the lowering of the stream bed, there is more discharge cross-section available under the bridges during high water, which reduces the risk of log jams.

During implementation, great importance is being attached to taking residents' concerns into account. Construction work is proceeding according to plan and should be largely completed by late autumn 2025 – ensuring a safe Holzmatt neighbourhood and improved ecological quality of the waterways.

GEOTEST is supporting the implementation of the protection concept from the Emme to the confluence of the Schmittegraben and Holzbach streams.
